It’s not easy being a kid today, the problems they face are complex. Research shows children aged 6-12 have increasingly fewer supports than they did in previous decades — more parents are working and there is decreased family and community involvement in children’s lives. This is especially true in low-income communities where parents may work multiple jobs to make ends meet and where fewer programs are available for children and youth. According to a report by BGC Canada, it is estimated that as many as 60% of Canadian children under the age of 12 are at home without supervision, are inactive and have fewer opportunities to participate in enriching activities.
During the most vulnerable hours of a child’s day our Clubs provide safe, supportive and inclusive spaces through our After School, Summer Camp and Youth Drop-In programs. After-school and day camp programs should not be a luxury. They are an essential part of a child’s healthy development. Every child enrolled at our Clubs has access to healthy meals and snacks, assistance with homework, art and science programs, and daily physical activity in the form of team sports and games. We provide learning-rich environments which offer children and youth the opportunity to build positive relationships, make healthy choices, develop confidence, connect with their community and learn life skills that last into adulthood. Our Clubs are a place to grow, thrive and play, a place to be safe and, more than anything a place to belong.
As a charity, we rely on community support and gifts like yours to provide our services and programs.
